NINE GOLD MEDALS

The athletes had come from all over the country

To win gold, silver and bronze.

Many weeks and months of training

All coming down to these games. 4

The blocks were all lined up for those who would use them

The hundred-yard dash was the race to be run.

There were nine resolved athletes in back of the starting line

Poised for the sound of the gun. 8

The signal was given, the pistol fired

And so did the runners all hurrying ahead.

But the smallest among them, stumbled and staggered

And fell on the runway instead. 12

He gave out a cry in frustration and anguish

His dreams and his efforts all wasted in to dust. 14

The eight other runners ran on their heels

The ones who had trained for so long to complete.

One by one they all turned around and went back to him

And brought the young boy to his feet 18

Then all the nine runners joined hands and continued.

The hundred-yard dash now reduced to a walk

And a banner above that said “Special Olympics”

Could not have been more on the mark. 22

     या कवितेत एका विशेष स्पर्धेची गोष्ट आहे, जिथे वेगवेगळ्या भागातून खेळाडू आले आहेत. त्यांचे ध्येय आहे सुवर्ण, रौप्य आणि कांस्यपदके जिंकणे. यासाठी त्यांनी अनेक आठवडे आणि महिने खूप सराव केला होता. आता तो महत्त्वाचा दिवस आला होता.

       शर्यतीसाठीचे ब्लॉक लावले होते, आणि धावायची शर्यत होती १०० यार्डांची. सुरुवातीच्या रेषेच्या मागे नऊ खेळाडू उभे होते, एकदम तयार, बंदुकीच्या आवाजाची वाट बघत.

      जसा इशारा मिळाला, पिस्तूलचा आवाज झाला आणि सगळे धावक पुढे धावू लागले. पण त्यांच्यापैकी एक, जो सर्वात लहान होता, तो अडखळला आणि धावपट्टीवर पडला.

    तो खूप निराश झाला आणि दुःखाने ओरडला. त्याची सगळी स्वप्ने आणि मेहनत मातीमोल झाली.

     बाकीचे आठ धावपटू धावत होते, ज्यांनी ही शर्यत पूर्ण करण्यासाठी खूप मेहनत घेतली होती. पण मग एक-एक करून ते सगळे मागे फिरले आणि त्या पडलेल्या मुलाजवळ गेले. त्यांनी त्याला उचलून उभे केले.

      आणि मग त्या नऊही धावकांनी एकमेकांचे हात धरले आणि ते पुढे चालू लागले. १०० यार्डांची धाव आता चालण्यात बदलली होती. आणि वर एक बॅनर लागले होते, ज्यावर लिहिले होते "स्पेशल ऑलिम्पिक्स". ते दृश्य अगदी समर्पक होते.
